Recently, I watched the Japanese drama Mr. Hiiragi’s Homeroom.
It is not just another school drama.
It is a story about something that exists in every society.
The power of lies.
One rumour.
One fake story.
One manipulated video.
One false accusation.
Sometimes, that is all it takes to change a person’s life forever.
Although fictional, the series raises a question that has become increasingly relevant in today’s digital world.
Have we become too quick to believe before we verify?
The Internet Doesn’t Wait For The Truth
Years ago…
Rumours spread through classrooms.
Neighbourhoods.
Offices.
Today…
They spread through Facebook.
Instagram.
TikTok.
WhatsApp.
Telegram.
X.
Within minutes, thousands or even millions of people may see an accusation before anyone asks whether it is true.
By the time the truth appears…
The damage may already have been done.
False Accusations Do Not Only Happen In Schools
Many people associate false rumours with teenagers.
Reality is very different.
False accusations can happen:
• in workplaces;
• between colleagues;
• between business partners;
• during family disputes;
• during divorce proceedings;
• between neighbours;
• between friends;
• during inheritance disputes; or
• anywhere emotions, money or conflict exist.
Sometimes, people are wrongly accused of fraud.
Sometimes, of stealing money.
Sometimes, of harassment.
Sometimes, of cheating a spouse.
Sometimes, of saying words they never actually said.
A single false allegation may destroy years of trust built over a lifetime.
When Lies Become “Evidence”
Years ago, people needed witnesses.

People only need:

an edited conversation;
a cropped photograph;
a short video; or
a post taken completely out of context.
Many people never stop to ask:
“Is this the whole story?”
Instead…
They click “Share.”
AI Changes Everything
Artificial intelligence (AI) has introduced another challenge.
Images can be manipulated.
Voices can be cloned.
Videos can be edited.
Faces can be swapped.
Conversations can be fabricated.
Deepfakes continue to become more convincing.
As technology advances, distinguishing between what is real and what is fabricated may become increasingly difficult.
The danger is not simply that AI can create false content.
The danger is that people may believe it before asking questions.
Reputation Takes Years To Build
Trust is fragile.
A good reputation may take decades to build.
A false accusation may destroy it overnight.
Even if the truth eventually comes out…
Search engines may still remember.
Social media may still remember.
AI may still remember.
The internet rarely forgets.
We All Have A Responsibility
Technology is not the enemy.
AI did not invent lies.
People did.
AI simply allows false information to spread faster, further and sometimes more convincingly than ever before.
Every click matters.
Every share matters.
Every comment matters.
Every repost matters.
Sometimes, choosing not to share unverified information is the most responsible decision we can make.
Before You Believe…
Before you comment.
Before you repost.
Before you judge.
Ask yourself:
Who verified this?
Is there evidence?
Could this image be edited?
Could this voice be cloned?
Could this video be manipulated?
Am I helping the truth…
Or helping a lie travel further?
Final Thought
The internet has given everyone a voice.
AI has given that voice even greater reach.
But neither technology nor algorithms decide what is true.
People do.
Perhaps the most important lesson from Mr. Hiiragi’s Homeroom is not about one classroom in Japan.
It is about every one of us.
Because behind every rumour…
Every accusation…
Every manipulated image…
Every viral post…
There is a real human being whose life may never be the same again.
